VALENTINO Pre-Fall 2015

The distinctive look of the flower children of the late sixties and early seventies has been edging into the frame since the spring collections, and a similar bohemian spirit captured the imagination of Valentino’s Maria Grazia Chiuri and Pierpaolo Piccioli for pre-fall. Their signature long-sleeved lace-trimmed dresses came sprigged with mimosas, lilies-of-the-valley, and four-leaf clovers and were paired with matching sixties-style ankle floral-print boots (although they would have looked just as stylish worn with bare feet), while Aran knit sweaters came embroidered with a ring of colorful flowers. An artistic outlook is never too far away at the Italian house, and this season the pair drew from a smorgasbord of inspiration that started with Sandro Botticelli’s Primavera and ended with the enchanting work of swinging London icon Celia Birtwell.

In a sense that breadth of art history mirrors the impressive range of this talented pair, who manage to bring a touch of the ethereal to an everyday wardrobe in the same way that they do a red-carpet one. Scenes of Botticellian pastoral bliss were woven into the fabric of cozy hooded cardigans and patchworked into suede A-line skirts, and those charming artisanal details lent a sense of romance to the idea of transitional dressing. Even the classic denim jacket came finished with butterflies, a recurring and endearing Valentino leitmotif. With more than 80 looks in the collection, fans at both ends of the spectrum will surely be spoilt for choice of unabashedly pretty clothes this season. And yet it’s hard to pick favorites given the number of standout pieces here, whether you’re the young starlet shopping for awards season, the chic working mom in search of a little practical magic, or somewhere in between.
